 Hi guys.

Just a question, for the Crossbow's second surge (+1 damage and move the target 1 space) how does that interact with large monsters?

The way we've been playing it is that the 1 space of movement is the same as the overlord moving it with one space, allowing it to be condensed, moved, and re-expanded in hilarious ways. While this is funny, it also makes the crossbow unthinkably powerful against large monsters, usually preventing them from blocking off anything, and giving the players the ability to move shadow dragons effectively 4 spaces.

Our original rationale for this was that if the overlord gets to use bull compression-and-reexpansion movement for large monsters, then that same movement should be usable by the players, but having seen the crossbow in action a few times I'm beginning to believe it's a bit too good.

"Q: I have a question about the crossbow and large monsters:

How does the 1 space movement work for large monsters? Does the hero get to shrink the monster to 1 space, move it 1 space, and then expand it in any direction the hero chooses?

A: Yes, the attacking hero chooses how the large monster moves. The large monster does indeed shrink and expand following normal monster movement. The monster shrinks from the targeted space."

Well, if the Overlord had control of the movement then he could choose to "shrink" into one space, "move" to another space the monster previously occupied, and then "re-expand" to occupy the same set of spaces he was in before.  He could effectively ignore the movement whenever it suited him and use it to his advantage if he saw an opportunity.

Allowing the heroes to control this movement (as Dam shows us is the case) at least ensures that the hero's own weapon will do something for him.

 This is the official answer:

"Q: I have a question about the crossbow and large monsters:

A: Yes, the attacking hero chooses how the large monster moves. The large monster does indeed shrink and expand following normal monster movement. The monster shrinks from the targeted space."

So the hero choose.
