I make it a point not to include more than 60 cards. Many people go slightly over 60 if they feel it's necessary, to something like 63 or so. Decks with more than 65 are rare at top tournament level.

Try this as a rough guideline for your first decks:

At least 30 characters.

10 gold producing or cost reducing locations.

20 other locations, events and attachments, but no more than 15 events and non-setup attachments. You can always put fewer cards in this group and take more characters instead.

Force yourself not to put more than, say, 63 cards in there total.

Watch your gold curve. Don't put in too much expensive stuff.

When you're done building the deck, try it out. Draw a 7-card starting hand several times. You should be able to flop at least 4 cards most of the time. If you regularly flop fewer than that, the deck is too expensive and/or has too many events/attachments.

These are very basic and general guidelines. When you gain experience, you might find yourself violating some of these rules. But I'd say these guidelines go a long way towards building solid decks.

Strictly speaking, there is no reason to ever go above 60 cards for a competitive deck.  If you have more than 60 cards you have too many :)

Fun decks though?  Have as many as you want.
