Hi dudes! Hi chixes! Im just wondering some things right now about this game and Id like some personal feedback on the game.

1: Should I wait for this second edition or the first is neat ? cause I realize that their are SO MANY EXPENSIONS (ITS OVER 9000!!!) and its quite an investment..

2: Is the game worth it? I mean its kinda pricy for those boxes. And the game mechanic, is it good or we gotta houserule it in order to be viable? Does the overlord tends to win more often?

I got tons of question about this game but I really want some thoughts from the community. Any pertinent information will do.

thanks!

Well, depends. Descent is a huge beast of a game even with just the base set, and the quests can easily take 4 or more hours to finish if your group hasn't streamlined things. It's fun to me, I like the OL vs Heroes dynamic where the dungeon leader hasn't been gimped to ensure a hero win like older dungeon crawls. The first edition of the game did suffer from some balance issues where the difficulty would swing wildly depending on the luck of the draw and number of players.

2nd edition looks like it's solved a lot of the complaints from 1st edition, but may have oversimplified things for some people. To me it's looking like 2nd edition could be more consistently balanced throughout a quest and quicker overall, good things in my book. If you are wanting to gather the 1st edition to use in 2nd, that would definitely get pricey. Though buying the conversion kit and using proxies is an option (I probably will be using a few for heroes I don't own).

If you're talking about 1st edition here, my opinion is yes on the houseruling, and yes on the OL winning until the heroes know what to do. The number of heroes being used also has a huge impact on the balance. Thegame mechanics themselves are really fun to me though, enough to overlook the rough spots.

You don't have to tell me how expensive this game is since I already know.  I always wanted to get this game for the longest time, but I wanted to know more about it before shelling out the cash.  My friend says it best about games that "You want to know how the game is before you end up in bed with it."  Sadly, he has ended up stuck in bed with a lot of bad board games.  The good thing about FFG is that you can read the rules for their games online for free.  Granted the game already has to be out.

I think that before you make the commitment you should start with the second edition.  If you like that, since that is all we are going to get from now on, then you could start thinking about getting the first edition stuff.  Sure it will be harder to find and more expensive, but if you don't end up liking the second edition then you will not like the first.  What I am basically trying to say is start off cheap with the second edition and if you like it then start trying to find the first edition stuff.

Personally, I love the first edition.  Best investment ever for my gaming group.  Also, make sure it is a game for your gaming group otherwise it will not get a lot of play time since it is kinda long.  That is something they are trying to fix with the second edition.

If you're already feeling leery about the price you'd have to pay for first edition, I would say follow you heart and hold off.  First edition is a great game, but I'm not seeing anything about second edition in these previews to suggest you'd be missing out by waiting.

Besides, there's always the (probably slim) chance that once 2e is out, demand for the 1e boxes will drop off and the prices will come down.  Road to Legend, for example, is highly sought after right now as many people prefer the campaign game to vanilla Descent.  However, take the vanilla 1e game and port the figs over to 2e's campaign with the conversion kit and you've got all you'd probably have really wanted from RtL anyway.
