After reading the post by Kirov and remembering that i actually have that hard to find book from battletech for the life paths and reading his basic take on it and thinking of the potentials for it...i decided that i am going to do something like it completely for each type of homeworld and character class given ( So yes the idea would be to roll once on each of the two appropriate tables for the backstory ) something to give the PCs a bit of extra flavor.  As always though subject to GM approval.  I am interested in anyone elses potential special events for PC backstory generation so feel free to message here or message me personally with the ideas and well see about potentially setting them up in the file....and yes i will give credit to whoevers ideas i use in the file...Im on here for fun not to rip...unless your talking bout the PCs getting ripped by tyranids....

Any ideas and insight from players and GMs alike will be most appreciated and i will post the completed file here and or on the dark reign site

Ok update on the work in progress....I now have all the basic worldtype and class type events tables set up and filled out...now all i have left is to flesh them out with the particular benefits or drawbacks associated with them.  In some cases you might get alot of extra starting thrones..others a natural talent in a particular skill....and others a potential bonus of +5 to +10 to a stat and or skill.....OR you could  wind up with powerful enemies that could send kill squads of mercs to settle a family feud with you...or loose an arm or leg in a accident....etc..etc...so it is balanced with drawbacks as well...and with each class table there is the potential to NOT have an event of note as well...

Hopefully ill have it done within the next few days...then to verifty the spelling etc...and post it for everyone to enjoy as they like

Making a character start the game with a lost limb which he has lost during character generation without being able to do anything about it is kind of mean.

Rogue Trader is a game where players largely choose the backstories of their characters via the origin path system. When most of the backstory is chosen by the player, adding a few random things that are compulsory once rolled might just as well mess up the intended backstory through incompatibility as add to it. A compulsory random effect would limit the backstory to something compatible with it.

Have you checked out the character creation system of Traveller? It's essentially one big romp of randomly generated outcomes of character development choices made by the player. The player essentially chooses what career the character will try to get into at age 18, then outcomes are rolled for. The player gets a number of choices along the way, but most of the time s/he simply drifts by the dice. And it works exceptionally well in that game due to the wealth of possibilities at every junction.

I'd love to have something similar for Rogue Trader, but it would have to replace the core character creation process rather than simply add to it.

This wasnt a addition to creation tables its designed to replace them HOWEVER the part your missing is this....EVERYTHING is subject to GM/player agreement.  And so you know in case you missed it there is a Rogue Trader background that does cause you to lose a limb. Which consequently is where i got the idea to begin with.

Lure of the Void:Criminal/Judged and found wanting RTCB pg 26

Also it isnt as bad as the Tainted/mutation background potential found on the same page either since cybernetics are far more commonplace than a chaos tainted mutant...as well as a inquisitor will accept 1000 acolytes with cybernetics before they would ever accept a tainted mutant like it has listed there so the cybernetics thing is the nicer one of the two i think.

Some interesting ideas but to random and to much penalties/benefits. For example, if i am going to play an Explorator and suddenly lose 10 Int with an unlucky dice roll, it is game over for that character.

A bonus/penalty of 3% or so won't cripple or benefit anyone to much. Also if you lose a limb, you should get at least a cyber replacement instead. These rolls should add to the background of your character but in the end not make much of a difference.

As a replacement for the Origin Chart, including carears, characters made using this method are going to start with almost nothing compaired to a standard Rogue Trader.  The origin chart normaly provides some 9 or so bonues, plus another 11ish with the carear.  Someone with reasonabley poor dice, such as rolling both "No event" options, would literaly have the default basic skills, and that's it.  No skills, no ability to use weapons, Not even the ability to speak Low Gothic.

I'm not sure why you have bonus starting thrones, when a Rogue Trader with any kind of profit factor makes a few hundred thrones pointless.  Lastly, you've stressed the GM/Player agreement, but it that's the case, why make a random table at all?  Why should the player agree to anything that grants a penalty, or indeed anything other then the selection their looking for?
