I must be blind!!  I can't find anything in the rulebook about the advantages of building a city.  Can you help.

 As a direct answer, they count as a Fort and Tower during certain phases; good to build early on...

They're mainly useful to complete some objectives. A city will also yield 2 gold at the end of each age, in addition to an army unit (except at the end of the age in which it was upgraded).
