The obvious -- and hopelessly Munchkin -- answer is "Fokker D.VII". A damage, lots of HP, can stall twice in a turn, can turn while stalling....

In the event that "next-gen" fighters are disallowed, I'm taking my Hanriot HD.1 -- IMO, the best all-around unit in the game.

I've only played a few games, but the Airco DH4 is my favorite so far. I like the dual shooters, and the speed doen't hurt.
My group has only been playing for a few weeks, and most have become enamoured of the Fokker D.VII. I'm looking forward to seeing what the Nieuport 17 can do!

The Fokker DVII does have some nice stall capabilities and indeed is a great plane.  However, even better would be the SSw DIV (Siemens Schuckert) found in one of the booster packs.  It has a climb rate of 1 and a higher ceiling than any other plane - you can control the battle by using altitude alone.

Still, my first choice goes to the Sopwith Camel.  Being quickly able to turn 270 degrees proves to have a myraid of usefulness.

The upcoming Bristol F.2.B. will be another great plane.  It moves like a fighter but its guns are able to fire both to the front and to the rear.

I've tried the Siemens-Schuckert against the Fokker, and the Fokker's won every fight so far. Make of that what you will.... :)

Another one for which I cannot fathom the love -- it''s slower than James May in molasses, and the fast-right-turn just means no one I use it against will ever oblige me in a turning duel.

Will it be Immelmann-capable? If so, it might be a viable fighter -- but then, it also only had one gun forward in any of its wartime configurations, and it's still vulnerable to a full-deflection (45- to 90-degrees off line of travel) shot.

Sorry -- the Quote function on this forum is utter rubbish for trying to make line-by-line responses.

Well then, success is measured by how you fly (play the game).  I've never lost a SSw DIV battle against a Fk DVII and in any other game, my Camel's achieve about a 20:1 kill rate.

Indeed -- I suspect an expert player with a B-deck Eindecker could take an expert in a D.VII. "There are no Dangerous Weapons...." >:)

I still love my Airco DH4, but I'm really liking the Nieuport 17. Yeah it can only take 12 hits, but I love the way it moves. Like Nungesser, mine always gets beat up [I have taken 10 damage every time!], but after 7 games with it I'm still undefeated. These games are usually against at least one Fokker D.VII or one Albatross D.VA including one on one shoot outs [3] and team battles of 2vs2 to 4vs4. Admittedly we're all noobs, but I think I have the luckiest plane!

edited for clarity

That would be the "Dogfight" booster pack.

It all depends. First you should pick a date and year when the fight is taking place.

Here is a datelist for the western front:

Germany
LFG Roland CII Wings of war may16
Albatros D.III Wings of war jan17
Fokker DR I Wings of war oct17
Albatross D. Va Wings of war oct17
Fokker DVII Wings of war may18

England
Nieuport 17 Wings of war aug16
R.E. 8 Wings of war feb17
De Havilland D.H. 4 Wings of war apr17
Sopwith Camel Wings of war jul17
Spad XIII Wings of war dec17
Sopwith Snipe Wings of war sep18

France
Nieuport 17 Wings of war may16
Spad VII £4 Wings of war sep16
Spad XIII Wings of war may17

Usually the latest plane are best. The reason it states "Wings of WAR is because it is part of the huge list of planes for my campaign, we use both metal and resin planes also to get more to chose from. The Wow planes are pre painted and easy to find so we use them if possibly, unless someone wants a custom paint job. The Austrian plane is not on the list since we only play on the western front right now, maybe we make next campaign somewhere else.

Note that the british got the french made planes a lot later.
