Hi :)  I got Descent about 3 weeks ago and I'm now obsessed with it, got all the expansions and lieutenant packs that were released up till now.  Here's what I painted so far (the base set):

Thanks :)

Just finished some more.  I force myself to paint 1 monster group, 1 hero and 1 lieutenant before each quest starts which helps alot in actually managing to paint them, otherwise I would just play all day and keep saying I'll paint tomorrow :P

He is an orc

Orcs in Terrinoth are a civilized race, thus siding with "Order" and the forces of "Good".

Their homeland are the Broken Plains

They are regarded as kind of a "neutral" race though, since their settlements tend to be secluded and far from major human settlements (not so different from elves in this regard); humans don't love them much (see also widow Tarha)

I like the fact that humans are depicted as xenophobic and afraid of what they call "monsters", while those monsters are their mightiest allies in the fight against darkness .

It's important to notice that in borderlands cities and wildlands settlements racial distinctions tend to fade as those places are natural "melting-pots" where the true monsters are near and recognizable.

Note that all I am accustomed with is Runebound and Descent I and II, so my info might be incomplete!

Ogres in terrinoth are big, bad monters, similar to Trolls but smarter and possessing regenerating abilities.

Hope this helps

Depends on interpretation, I suppose. The "civilized" orcs live in the Free Cities alongside humans and other races, most notably the city of Dawnsmoor which is mostly orcs from what I gather in the lore.

The orcs of the broken plains are a bunch of savage tribes who have been disparate and disorganized for a long time, but have recently united for reasons not yet known to the rest of the world.

However, the orcs who live in the Free Cities are probably descended from the same tribes who currently occupy the Broken Plains.

They are regarded as kind of a "neutral" race though, since their settlements tend to be secluded and far from major human settlements (not so different from elves in this regard); humans don't love them much (see also widow Tarha)

I'm not sure where you got that. Dawnsmoor is one of the seven major Free Cities from Runebound and is known to have a large orcish population. I'm sure there are lots of small secluded villages with orcs in them, but there are a lot of small secluded villages with humans and other races too. It's part of the whole medieval era vibe that fantasy settings typically go for.

I never got the impression that the orcs who live in the baronies of Daqan were particularly isolated. Maybe some of them are, but not as a race.

I like the fact that humans are depicted as xenophobic and afraid of what they call "monsters", while those monsters are their mightiest allies in the fight against darkness .

I wouldn't characterize humans as xenophobic, in general. Sure, there are some racist bastards out there (ask Widow Tahra,) but in general humans don't seem afraid or biased against non-human races. I imagine there's just as much bigotry among other races as well.

The dwarves abandoned the Free Cities to go live in their mountains after the Dragon Wars ended. They weren't forced out, they left willingly. The elves were nearly wiped out in the fighting so they naturally pulled back to their homelands. Gnomes, from what little we know, are rare and mysterious to begin with.

The orcs were the only race other than humans who stuck around in any significant presence, and by all accounts they were welcomed into the society of the Free Cities. (Isolated incidents with racist bastards notwithstanding.)

The hybrids are universally reviled for the role they played in the Dragon Wars, and that probably is unfair since at least some of them were enslaved. But that's more about bad blood as a result of war, rather than bigotry and xenophobia.

Overall, I think FFG has done a wonderful job of avoiding stereotyping their races. There are good humans and evil humans, both within the borders of Daqan. Good elves and evil elves. Good orcs and evil orcs. There are (or were) even good Dragonlords and evil Dragonlords - though it seems like all the good ones got killed...

Waiqar and the Uthuk are admittedly pretty evil, but they're the only ones like that and let's face it; every good fantasy story needs a couple of plainly evil villains to be defeated.

I have to ask, what kind of paints do you use for this and are the colors easy to figure out? Also do you use any special kinds of brushes because I have never painted miniatures before but since getting this game I am pretty obsessed with it and would love to add more flavor to it. And is there anything else I should know before starting the painting? Awesome job on your figures by the way!

Thanks :)  I use Citadel (Games workshop) paints and mostly paintbrushes by them aswell.  I started by getting a starter pack with 6-8 paints but Descent has so many different monsters and heroes that you need to have quite alot of colours.  That or you'ed have to mix colours alot to avoid buying alot of pots.  I've been painting for a long time so I had bought a box with all the Citadel colours (around 155) as I hate having to mix colours lol!  Although I've never tried them I've heard Vallejo paints are good aswell.  One tip I'd give you is dont apply the paint straight away on the model, in my experience the paint (atleast Citadel ones) doesnt stick well to it.  So I first spray paint them in black matt (spray doesnt have the problem of not sticking) and then paint.  Some people use white undercoat but that's down to the person's preference on how to paint.

Any chance you'd do commissions?  I've always wanted my Descent pieces painted but could never find the time to do it.  I'd be interested on your thoughts.
