TRAFFIC REPORT

Following up on a report of "unusual traffic" in the sector, Rebel forces decide to investigate and ambush Imperial forces in the local asteroid belt.  The approaching traffic is, indeed, unusual- a Lambda-class shuttle escorted by Royal Guard Interceptors and TIE fighters...

SECTOR: Doldur

WINNER: Rebels

DATE: 2014-06-19

EMPIRE: J-Man (110 points)

Omicron Group Pilot (Lambda-class Shuttle) + Fire Control System + Engine Upgrade

Royal Guard Pilot (TIE Interceptor)

Royal Guard Pilot (TIE Interceptor)

Obsidian Squadron Pilot (TIE Fighter)

Obsidian Squadron Pilot (TIE Fighter)

Obsidian Squadron Pilot (TIE Fighter)

REBEL: Chris (105 points)

Wes Janson (X-wing)

"Dutch" Vander (Y-wing) + R5 Astromech + Ion Cannon Turret

Roark Garnet (HWK-290) + Ion Cannon Turret

Tarn Mison (X-wing)

ACTION: The Imperial spread out as they closed the range, looking for possible threats hiding among the asteroids.  The Rebels made a slower approach, waiting to see what the Imperials would do and looking for any points of weakness.  In the ensuing dogfight, Wes Janson claimed a quick kill (TIE Fighter), while "Dutch" and Roark "Ion-ed" the shuttle.  Return fire crippled and finally destroyed Roark's HWK-290 and stripped Janson's shields.  Wes and "Dutch" then each claimed a kill (RG Interceptor and TIE Fighter, respectively) but the remaining TIE Fighter claimed Wes. The second Royal Guard Interceptor was also destroyed (by I don't know who). After several turns of play where the only damage sustained was self-inflicted (damned asteroids... who put those things here?), the shuttle decided to make a break for it and accelerated in an attempt to disengage before being destroyed.  As Janson's X-wing (now destroyed) was the only ship in range, the shuttle was able to make good its escape (with 1 Hull remaining).  The remaining TIE Fighter put up a good fight but was eventually brought down by "Dutch".

The Rebels never did find out what that shuttle was carrying or why it was so important but they became convinced that it was definitely... "something"... and warranted further investigation.

I've got two for you.

SECTOR: Auril

WINNER: Rebel Alliance

DATE: 2014-6-20

I'm reading two pairs of squints. Looks like we've got the jump on them.

Rebels (100 Points, Me)

Wes Janson + VI

Jan Ors + Nien Numb + ICT

Ibby + HLC + Opportunist

Empire (100 Points)

Carnor Jax + VI

Royal Guard Pilot + VI + Targeting Computer

Kir Kanos

Royal Guard Pilot + Targeting Computer

While on a scouting mission, a small Rebel group encountered an Imperial Interceptor patrol. Caught apart from their wing-mates, the Imps were cut down quickly, barely managing to take the shields off the HWK and X-Wing. As they ejected, Imperials swore revenge.

SECTOR: Death Star

WINNER: Black Sun

Rebels (100 Points, Me)

Wes Janson + VI

Jan Ors + Nien Numb + ICT

Ibby + HLC + Opportunist

Black Sun (100 Points)

Kath Scarlet + Marksmanship + Merc. Co-pilot + Seismic Charge

Carnor Jax + VI

Kir Kanos

I'll do you fast, Ibby old pal!

Kanos and Jax, their pride injured from their last run in with the Rebels, decided to enlist the help of bounty hunters and the Black Sun in order to hunt their prey and avenge their honor and pride. Jax, however, was the first man down, though not before dealing substantial damage to Ibtisam's B-Wing with Kath's help. In a desperate move, Ibitsam K-Turned to get one solid shot from her guns before she went down. But her B-Wing couldn't handle the maneuver and disintegrated around her.

The HWK meanwhile landed shot after shot on both Kanos and Kath, bringing both to within one hull point. Wes for his part, closed to point blank range on Kanos, and stuck there for a few maneuvers, but just when he thought he had Kanos, the tricky pilot managed to dodge his shots by what seemed like centimeters. Jan likewise closed for the kill on Kath, damaging her maneuvering thrusters, sensor array, and managing to blind her. Somehow though, the Firespray kept flying. And caught Wes flying into her sights. Her blasts caused a power surge in the X-Wing, and Wes found himself floating home.

Angered by the loss of her wingmates, Jan put Kath down hard. But unfortunately for her, a badly damaged Kanos had maneuvered right around behind her, and she joined the others adrift...

As an aside, this second game was amazingly close, and I made some targeting errors, based on the idea that Kanos would've gone down with 5 Dice at range one in two consecutive turns. Unfortunately for me, Kanos managed 3 Evades both times (2 on  the dice and one with the action). I should've had Jan finish the Firespray off, as it was facing the board edge with 1-2 hull and one Ion token at one point, and I had her shoot at Kanos. I mostly needed to go for the easier kills, and not be arrogant about the situation when I'm ahead. Also, losing both Ibtisam and Wes to crits sucked, but hey it happens.

Thanks for the report! Who would've expected Black Sun to pose such a threat to the Death Star!?

And in other Black Sun news, a pirate fleet has been detected in a sparsely-populated sector at the edge of the galaxy...

Rebel Terrorists Continue to Target Humanitarian Relief Ships

GRAVLEX MED SYSTEM - Flights from the Star Destroyer Inflexible, heedless of the danger to themselves, were murdered in their efforts to bring food and medical relief supplies to Gravlex Med.

Despite recent tragic setbacks, TIE/sa craft piloted by the courageous complement crew of the Inflexible, are determined to see the Anx population - regardless of their non-human nature - liberated from rebel occupation.

"It's just the right thing to do," Maj. Purvis, the newly-installed wing commander aboard the Inflexible said. "If we were to just leave these xenos to the rebel devices, then other xenos in the galaxy would begin to doubt the Empire's otherwise proven resolve to return stability to the Galaxy."

A ship-borne spokesmen of COMPNOR fleshed out Maj. Purvis' statement, saying: "While human citizens of the Empire are not encouraged to maintain social relations outside our species, we have to acknowledge that it does happen. If we fail to stamp out the insurgency even here on Gravlex Med, then the aliens are going to talk, and eventually they are going to spread their sedition to proper citizens."

Exercizing it's known journalistic independence and critical analysis, HNN editors questioned the veracity of the Inflexible crew's statements, interviewing non-human inhabitants in the galaxy. Aliens report not having any shaken faith in the Emperor's ability to govern the galaxy both wisely and with more-than-sufficient regard for its non-human population.

"We have full faith in the Emperor and the Emperor's justice. We're extremely grateful for the Navy's attemtps to bring us aid"  an alien in the Inflexible's detention bay told reporters.

I guessed you'd end up running a bomber squad, since I accidentally took your TIE Fighter dials home with me. You'll be pleased to know that the saboteur has been dealt with in the harshest way possible -- non-stop viewings of the Star Wars Holiday Special.

Imperial Exploratory Mission Missing

SELINE SYSTEM - An Imperial scouting mission into the Dalonbian sector has been ambushed by rebel insurgents. Unattributable reports suggest that two high-level Imperial officials were accompanied by an unnamed bounty hunter in search of rebel individuals.

While some suggest betrayal by the bounty hunter, who may have in fact been a rebel infiltrator, others say that this was a daring but foolish strike into a portion of the galaxy that none of the parties to the galactic conflict have a stake in. Armchair strategists on Coruscant suggest that even the follow-up search mission performed by a flight of TIE/sa bomber craft was a misbegotten venture, and local Imperial forces should have left well-enough alone.

Relief Bombers Finally Break Through

GRAVLEX MED SYSTEM - Imperial persistence pays off for the enslaved and beleaguered Anx on Gravlex Med in the Riaoballo sector, as TIE/sa craft carrying humanitarian relief packages break through the rebel fighter blockade surrounding the planet.

"This is a great victory for the Empire," Maj. Purvis, the Commander of the fighter wing aboard the Imperial Star Destroyer Inflexible reported. "We were starting to run out of..."

"...hope for the population on the planet," Maj. Purvis' ISB adjudant added to his superior's statement.

"Yes... er... hope," the Wing Commander affirmed.

Reports from the planet meanwhile attest that the relief packages are a "hit", some even having a "blast".

"The TIE/sa is a magnificent platform," the wing commander told HNN. "It is highly versatile, modular, robust, and capable of carrying a tremendous payload of..."

"...medicines and foodstuffs," his adjudant interjected.

In this way, the Empire is putting to rest misinformation of its intentions towards non-humans. In the past week, many TIE pilots risked and even lost their lives attempting to bring aid to the Anx. Unlike the insurgent rebellion, the Empire demonstrates the humanity in humanitarian, showing the whole galaxy that humans have the necessary wisdom and compassion to take on the human's burden of caring for the sundry non-alien species of the galaxy; helping them to overcome their native separatist spirits, which would otherwise split the galaxy apart.

Here's one from me from last weekend:

This match was played as part of a playtest for Mikael Hasselstein's online campaign engine. We played on a 3x6 foot surface, starting at opposite ends (lengthwise), with a dense asteroid field near the Imperial deployment zone. The objectives were for the Rebels to reach the opposite side (Imperial deployment zone) and escape into hyperspace with valuable supplies, while the Imperials were tasked with intercepting and destroying the Rebels. Imperial player Kelley was fairly new to the game, and Rebel player DagobahDave was rusty and using a GR-75 for the first time.

The opening rounds saw the TIE fighters spread into the asteroid field in two main groups, while the Rebel fighters kept close to the GR-75 as the Outer Rim Smuggler broke off to make use of its turret. Formation flying worked well for the TIEs, who chipped away the Rebels' shields as they desperately tried to punch through the mini-blockade. The TIE squad leader drew much of the Rebel fire but showed excellent evasion skills. A surprise turn by the GR-75 crushed a TIE, but later a miscalculation smashed the Y-Wing escort. The X-Wing was overwhelmed by enemy fire, leaving the GR-75 without escorts and plowing through asteroids like a runaway groundspeeder in a crowded market, but the impacts and withering TIE laser fire eventually destroyed it. In the end, the Outer Rim Smuggler was the only Rebel survivor, having fled into hyperspace, but six TIEs remained and the operation was a clear victory for the Imperials.

More Relief Supplies Pound Gravlex Med

GRAVLEX MED SYSTEM - TIE/sa craft from the Star Destroyer Inflexible continue to bring food and medical supplies to Gravlex Med, where beleaguered Anx inhabitants praise the Empire's humanitarian intervention, while rebels haplessly attempt to intervene.

After a rough start, the TIE/sa and TIE/ln pilots and crews aboard the Inflexible have mastered the craft of defeating the rebels' attempts to thwart their passage towards the planet. These pilots are a far cry from the inexperienced academy students they were when the Inflexible began its mission in the Quelii sector, and now it the Riaoballo sector.

When asked the secret to their success, Maj. Purvis, the wing commander aboard the Inflexible, first smiled: "Well, if I give that away, then the enemy will know what we're up to won't they?"

When pressed a little further, he acknowledged. "Really it's no secret. We have simply adopted standard imperial navy doctrine."

"When the Inflexible first began its tour of duty for the stamping out of the rebellion, we were forced to put these neophyte pilots into service before they had finished all their standard training. It was about last week, when we found manuals on escort flying, and we had our pilots read those. That seems to have done the trick."

And so, with the Imperial NAvy implementing more rigidly its own tactical doctrines are the insurgent rebels once again defeated. The battles over Gravlex Med demonstrate that all the Empire must do in order to crush the rebellion is to become still more Imperial.

Thanks for the report!

Oh... oops. Everything in the previous report was accurate, except for one thing. (As you can read in the news,) the Empire actually won that one. Not the rebels. That should teach me to copy and paste.

This one is actually accurate:

HoloNet News (HNN) Exclusive:

Imperial Forces Break Through on Gravlex Med

GRAVLEX MED SYSTEM - After a long fought campaign of humanitarian aid despite rebel attempts to destroy the TIA/sa craft carrying the medical and nutritional supplies, Imperial Forces finally break through to liberate the planet from insurgent control.

However, what they found on the planet's surface was beyond all they could have feared. In the wake of their defeat, the rebellion laid waste to the once inhabitable planet in what can only be described as a scorched-earth campaign.

"It defies all imagination," Wing Commander Purvis said, shaking his head in disbelief.

"Yeah, it's as if someone bombed the place," one of his squadron leaders added, with a slight cough.

It was clear, however, that the TIE/sa squadron was not through with his mission, as the squadron leader, name and call sign undisclosed was immediately called up for hazardous combat duty.

"Who would do such a thing?" Purvis said with extra emphasis as his subordinate departed.

Who indeed? It is clear that the rebellion does not know civilized boundaries, and that their increasingly desperate tactics of terrorism are a sign that they are ever closer to final defeat.

These are the battle reports for my first tournament attendance, which occurred at Red Castle Games in Portland, Oregon. It's safe to say that I hate Phantoms.

BATTLE #1
Wedge and his X-Wing wingmen were utterly crushed by this Phantom and four-TIE swarm. It was a complete shutout, with only a couple points of damage delivered to the enemy squad played to perfection by a recent winner of an Imdaar Alpha event.

BLACK SUN: Adrian

Howlrunner + Determination
Obsidian Squadron Pilot
2x Academy Pilot

BATTLE #2
After delivering his Assault Missiles and their splash damage, Airen Cracken proved to be a weak link. Wedge and his boys focus-fired the Z-95 quickly, then blasted Wes shortly after. Ultimately Luke alone faced my three surviving X-Wings and couldn't withstand the hail of lasers. Hot dice!

SECTOR: Quence
WINNER: Rebels

Luke Skywalker + R2-D2 + Shield Upgrade + Adrenalin Rush
Wes Jansen + R5-P9 + Adrenalin Rush + Munitions Failsafe + Flechette Torpedoes
Airen Cracken + Wingman + Munitions Failsafe + Assault Missiles

BATTLE #3
Andy's ships raced to the center of the board with surprising speed, but the X-Wings removed Boba Fett from the battlefield with a series of great shots. "Whisper" wasn't worried, though. Wedge was dead and even three X-Wings would be hard-pressed to deal with a lone Phantom. After scoring a lucky shot that disabled the Phantom's shields, the X-Wings could only maneuver desperately to catch the slippery "Whisper" -- and failed in the end!
