The Wandering Angel was adrift.  She had escaped the Imperial ambush, but overloaded her systems in the process.  Her two remaining escorts kept watch and reported in to Oracle Base, prompting two more X-wings to be sent to guard the vessel.  The Angel was the first to detect a pair of ships jumping in well beyond the fighter escort’s sensor range.  The two ships closed cautiously. Were these Imperial scout ships or perhaps bounty hunters?

The ships made no reply to hails, and worse were not transmitting a transponder code.

Rooke Leader made the call to “treat as hostile” and the X-wings moved to engage.  As the X-wings closed… the two ships (YT-1300s) opened fire, Rooke Three lost shields and the X-wings returned fire scoring some hits on the closest freighter.  Rooke leader and Rooke Four performed an extended K-turn and got behind the freighters as one of them buzzed Rooke three.  Rooke three exploded in a fireball a moment later as it took direct hits to the hull.  The remaining Rookes hammered the nearest freighter bringing down her shield and inflicting damage, but the freighter managed to keep going, trading fire with the X-wings as they pursued.

The burning freighter unleashed a torrent of shots ripping into Rooke Leader, the ship came apart, but by a miracle Rooke Leader managed to eject along with his R2 unit.  Rooke Two had veered around in a wide arc and was now bearing down on the freighter.  The X-wing pilot’s shots were true and the ship ruptured and came apart, leaving one untouched freighter remaining against two X-wings.  The rush of combat took Rooke Two and he flew right into the waiting guns of the undamaged remaining freighter.  The crippled fighter spun out of control and finally exploded.

Wandering Angel and escort stand down and prepare to be boarded!”  The freighter demanded.

“Pirates,” muttered Rooke Four, as he sent a burst transmission to Oracle Base.

“We will comply,” responded the captain of the Wandering Angel, what else could the Captain do?

HoloNet News (HNN) Exclusive:

Academy Pilots Own Worst Enemy

VINSOTH - In a tragic mistake in the Vinsoth system of the Quelii sector, Imperial fighter pilots fire on their own.

Due to deep battle stresses of recent days, in which starfighter forces in the Quelii sector - particularly those aboard the Star Destroyer Inflexible - found themselves firing on other imperial forces operating in the area. After recent engagements against traitorous elements, the TIE fighter and bomber pilots seem to have been unaware of the Imperial loyalty of those they fired upon. Given their inexperience, they - thankfully - proved to be only a modest threat to the more experienced forces that they faced.

According to a recorded comm transcript, the loyal forces' transponder codes failed to impress the Inflexible's pilots.

"Bogey's on our 30-by-naught," one pilot was recorded as saying.

"Hey, it's squawking green. It says... Lord Va..." a pause, "That's got to be a fake. We're dealing with more traitors!"

"Arm proton torpedoes, men!"

The Star Destroyer Inflexible has served as an educational platform at the Prefsbelt Naval Academy, but was recently pressed into combat service. During its recent service its pilots have faced numerous rebellious terrorist threats, and casualties have been high.

In order to reinstill discipline, both the Inflexible's captain and wing commander have been 'relieved' of duty, without a pending investigation. Imperial justice shows its swiftness and efficiency.

The new wing commander of the Inflexible's starfighter wing - the newly promoted Maj. Purvis - spoke to HNN reporters.

"Efforts have been redoubled in order to make certain that no such tragedies ever happen again, Maj. Purvis said. "Disciplining will continue until morale improves."

Investigative reporters were unable to verify the execution of Fmr. Maj. Hasselstein, however, and rumors persist that a Lambda-class shuttle craft went missing from the Inflexible's complement prior to the arrival of ISB agents from Coruscant.

"Such rumors are treason," both Maj. Purvis and an ISB agent confirmed.

Phase 7 is complete! See the results here:

http://outworld-stud...xgc-s01p07.html

The overall campaign score hasn't changed, although there were lots of battle reports. For a more dynamic campaign, I encourage players to broaden their theater of war beyond a single sector, or to consider that their victories in one sector actually benefit their allies in other sectors in some way. If there's no visible change in the map at the end of the next phase, I'll introduce some rules changes in order to spice things up.

When posting your battle reports, please follow the battle report form precisely. Don't abbreviate ship names (be sure to include "Pilot" if it's on the card name), use the "Ship + Upgrade + Upgrade" formula and use the standard Year-Month-Day dating method. If you are flying multiple ships with exactly the same name and upgrades, use a "3x Academy Tie" listing or whatever is appropriate. This saves me a lot of work when compiling the battle reports!

Thanks to all the participants! Keep those battle reports coming in.

Phase 8 is now in effect (nevermind the June 5 start date):

NEW RULE: Starting now, any sector with a fleet marker on it is considered conquered. A conquered sector is permanently under the control of the faction owning it (that is, the sector has been "won" until the end of the current campaign season). Battle reports submitted for sectors that have been conquered will be applied to a random unconquered sector instead.

The Alliance Corvette Razor emerged from Hyperspace along with its pathfinder Y-wing.  They were responding to a distress call from the Wandering Angel but as the ship’s sensors began their sweep, it was clear no transport was in the area.  “Are you sure this is the right location?” asked the Captain.  “Yes sir, we have a transponder fix. We detect a vessel directly ahead.” The crewman replied.

As the corvette approached, the single ship mass broke into several signatures.  “Captain we have 3 Y-wings, 2 R-22 spearheads, and a HWK-290 closing fast… no communications!”

The Corvette went to battle stations as the fighters advanced.  The pathfinder Y-wing stayed close, hoping to mask his signature just as the Pirates had, but the Pirates knew that trick and concentrated their fire on the Y-wing.  The Fighter’s shields failed and the hull breached in their first pass, it erupted into a blossom of debris.

The Razor’s main weapons fired taking down a pirate fighter’s shields as she plowed through the middle of the fighter swarm.  One pirate Y-wing glanced off the hull and internal explosions ripped it apart.  The remaining Pirates realizing their peril broke and scattered in all directions, desperate to avoid the massive ship bearing down on them.  As they passed, the quad batteries found targets and opened fire, but the chaos of the Pirates maneuvers made them difficult to hit, and only a few shields took light damage.

The pirates was confused in a mass behind the Corvette were now trying to get organized and avoid hitting each other, except for the R-22 spearheads.  They alone pulled tight turns and were now hitting the Corvette on her flanks, as the Razor struggled to keep shields up and return fire with her quad batteries.

Meanwhile the Pirate Leader, Ttam Blackheart brought his freighter into the fray struggling to get his men organized, but in so doing now drew fire from the Razor’s turbolasers.  The successive barrages took down his shields, but from his position he could see the Corvette was weakening, each time the R-22s made a pass it was longer before the shields came back up, some shots were hitting the hull itsel inflicting damage.  Blackheart knew his boys could take the Corvette, if he could get his pilots into the fight.

The Razor struck an asteroid as she turned knocking out one of her batteries; structural damage was clearly visible on some of the forward sections of the hull.   in her desperation to clear the asteroid field another asteroid struck the ship and she listed to port, her aft quad still trying to hold off the Spearheads, and managing to shoot one of them down.  But the Pirates had finally regrouped and were giving chase to the Ship pounding her aft section, and crippling her forward section.  Only the plucky little repair droid kept the ship operating, bypassing damaged systems and re-routing others.  Victory was near for Blackheart, but as the Razor cleared the asteroids the burning ship could only do one thing to survive…The ship managed to jump to hyperspace.

Ttam Blackheart stared at the empty space where the Corvette had been. “Blast,” he muttered.

HoloNet News (HNN) Exclusive:

Inflexible Fighter Wing Strives for Redemption

DANTOOINE - The intrepid TIE Fighter Pilots of the Imperial Star Destroyer Inflexible, not as fresh from the Naval Academy of Prefsbelt as they once were, bloody the traitorous noses of the rebellion in two skirmishes.

After their embarassing friendly fire incidents in the Quelii Sector, the Inflexible - pressed into service in order to provide newly finished TIE pilots from the Prefsbelt Naval Academy - has been relocated to the Riaoballo sector in order to root out rebel activity.

After having had both the ship's captain and its wing commander relieved of duty, the acting captain of the ship, Capt. Thernstrom (awaiting formal promotion) is eager to instil lacking discipline. In once incident, he made it clear to acting wing commander Purvis that if it had been up to him, all of the wing's pilots would have been shot and redeployed to the Kathol Sector. When asked if his orders would have been in that sequence, the acting captain answered in the affirmative.

Heightened discipline proves to be a winning motivator for the squadrons of the Inflexible, as they have recently proved their renewed mettle against terrorist forces in the Riaoballo sector. In one incident, they destroyed a freighter accompanied by two Y-Wing fighters. In another skirmish they faced two X-Wings accompanied by a newer rebel model, the B-Wing.

Asked about the secret to his success (especially as compared to his predecessor), Maj. Purvis replied - "discipine and doctrine."

"We fly a tight ship around here," he commented. "We fly strong formations, in precisely the manner that our betters have instructed us to do."

HNN did witness one incident where Maj. Purvis was forced to berate a bomber pilot for breaking formation.

"Dumbhead," Maj. Purvis had shouted, "you will be shot and sent to the Kathol Sector!"*

I like this new commander :)

Although i think it would of been funnier if an unnamed sergeant had said "Do you want to be shot and shipped off to the Kathol Sector?!?" quoting the earlier mention of the phrase, instead of the guy himself

Inflexible Fighter Wing Presses Advantage

ANX MINOR - The courageous pilots of the Imperial Star Destroyer Inflexible continue to bring both liberation and civilization to the intrepid systems of the Outer Rim. A small group of rebel terrorists were cleared out of the Anx Minor system, reopening interstellar trade to the great relief of the native species of that section of space.

The area, known by the uncouth name of 'Anx Space', had been blockaded by rebel elements, seeking to usurp the resources and productivity for their own seditious purposes. Now that the Myto's Arrow hyperroute has been cleared of the insurgency, the Anx can once again devote their industrious productivity to its proper purpose: the greater glory of the Emperor, and the security and order that only the Empire is capable of bringing.

Meanwhile, back in the Quelii sector, the escaped former wing commander of the Inflexible is being hunted down to face the Emperor's justice, or be killed as a fugitive from that same justice. A bounty hunter in the Navy's employ, and with the supervision of one of the Emperor's own guard was able to locate Maj. Mikael Hasselstein in a far corner of the Praven Prime system. He was accompanied by an element of bombers and a flight of TIE fighters.

Regrettably justice was only meted out in half measure, as the bounty hunter failed to apprehend the main fugitive, while the Emperor's own servants made quick word of the traitor Hasselstein's entourage. Hasselstein managed to escape in a stolen TIE Bomber.

Commenting on the failed arrest of his former superior officer, Maj. Purvis said "we don't need that scum," referring to the ineffectual bounty hunter.

HoloNet News (HNN) Exclusive:

Humanitarian Aid Intercepted and Destroyed by Rebel Terrorists

GRAVLEX MED - Rebels thwarted an attempt by the Imperial Navy to bring aid to millions of Anx being held captive by the Rebellion. After an initially successful attempt to break through rebel lines, two squads of TIE bombers accompanied by shuttle craft were intercepted and shot down by rebel terrorists.

Insurgent rebels fired upon two squads consisting of TIE/sa bomber craft and accompanying Lambda-class shuttles on their way to the planet. The bombers carried little ordnance aside from morale-boosting leaflets and emergency aid packages containing nutritional supplements and medicines for the enslaved Anx. The shuttle craft were ferrying aid workers in order to help distribute the aid packages and treat afflicted Anx suffering from both the environmental catastrophe brought about by the rebel occupation, as well as the cuts inflicted by rebel slave-driving whips and chains.

"This is a tremendous blow to our relief effort," Maj. Purvis reported to HoloNet News reportes embedded aboard the Imperial Star Destroyer Inflexible. The Inflexible, recently deployed to the Riaoballo sector after a tragic - but successful - tour in the Quelii sector, has been tasked with humanitarian relief in Anx Space.

When asked to comment on rebel propaganda that the Empire's bombers had been en route to the planet in order to carpet bomb population centers, Maj. Purvis shook his head. "While the truth is always the first casualty in any war, this cynical misrepresentation is beyond the pale. I can't imagine that the rebels will succeed in getting anyone to believe such outragious lies."

"Let us mourn not only the dead pilots and aid workers who were brutally murdered today over Gravlex Med, let us also say prayers on behalf of the Anx people who are still held captive on that benighted planet," Maj. Purvis added.

Today's the last day for Phase 8 and it looks like there will be some map changes this time. With the new "conquered sector" rule, we might actually see a faction win this campaign before too long.

Thanks for the report! I'm officially cutting off Phase 8 right now, so anything that comes in later today will go into Phase 9. From what I've seen so far, it's clear that battle lines have been drawn and the Empire's superiority is definitely not something to take for granted.
