PHASE 6 HAS BEGUN

The Empire has reinforced the Corellian Sector with an entire naval battle group, routing the rebels and establishing marshal law. [The battles in this sector have been reset, leaving the current score at 4 Imperial wins, 0 Black Sun wins, 0 Rebel wins.] The Alliance has liberated the Quelii Sector for now, while the Empire battles elements of Black Sun in the Doldur Sector.

Visit the campaign website and submit your battle reports!

I'm adding a new feature to the campaign called the Mission Bonus. During this phase, if at least half of your squad's ships are TIE Interceptors, you'll gain 1 bonus faction win if you are victorious.

BATTLE OF MIDWAY STATION

DATELINE: Sullust- Reports continue to come in, of a major victory for the Alliance to Restore the Republic over the forces of the Galactic Empire in the Bremma Sector.  This sparsely settled sector had been a hotbed of sedition and anti-Imperial activity providing a refuge and recruiting ground for the Rebellion.  About a month ago, the Empire dedicated major fleet elements to root out and eliminate these pockets of resistance to Imperial authority.  Greatly outnumbered, the Rebels dispersed, hoping to avoid major engagement, while launching harassing raids to distract and demoralize their enemies.  After weeks of pursuit, however, Imperial forces had managed to track down and isolate the Rebel flagship, the Mon Calamari cruiser Liberty, under Admiral Yamarus.  In a series of strikes and counter-strikes, the Liberty and the Imperial Star Destroyer Adamant battered each other, until the Imperial ship was forced to withdraw.  With the destruction of the Adamant’s Carrier Wing, the ISD was forced to close to gun range, where she was destroyed by a combination of fighter and gun fire.  The engagement was heralded as a major victory for the Rebellion, whose forces now have free reign in the sector.  Imperial authorities have refused comment.

Forces involved in the recent fighting:

REBEL FORCES:

MC80 Cruiser LIBERTY (Admiral Yamarus)

Carrier Wing (remnants)-

    2x A-wing interceptors

    2x B-wing heavy assault fighters

    4x X-wing fighters

    2x Y-wing assault bombers

    1x HWK-290 light freighter

IMPERIAL FORCES:

ISD ADAMANT

Carrier Wing (remnants)-

    8x TIE/LN fighters

    2x TIE/IN interceptors

    2x TIE/SA bombers

    1x Lambda-class shuttle

Battle #1- CHANCE ENCOUNTER

Rebel and Imperial Strike Groups encounter each other on the way to their targets.  Both teams must push on, maintaining sufficient force to land a crippling blow, while trying to prevent their opponent from doing the same!

As soon as the Rebels were in range, the ISD opened up with Turbo Lasers and Ion Cannon.  Despite the withering fire, the Rebels pressed their attack, scoring multiple direct hits with Torpedoes and HLCs; the target’s shields flickered and finally went out.  The ship’s hull was soon scorched and battered but the guns continued to fire.  The Imperial Combat Air Patrol (Space Patrol?) claimed a Y-wing and a B-wing before being engaged by the Rebel X-wing escorts.  Then, things went dark for the Rebels, as “Dutch” and “Blue-1” perished to gunfire.  The last X-wing (and a defending TIE) also succumbed to the Adamant’s Turbo Lasers.  The surviving Rebels (Roark and “Red-1”), hobbled by the ISD’s Tractor Beams, called off their, now pointless, attacks and turned for home.  The Adamant had lost all of its shields (10 factors) and suffered 5 (of 15) Hull hits.

Battle #3- THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK…barely…

The surviving members of the Imperial Strike Group throw themselves in a suicidal attack on the Rebel command ship, Liberty.

The Imperials pressed their desperate attack and managed to reduce the MC80’s shields by 5 (of 15) factors before being wiped out.  The Rebel defenders had also suffered, with the prototype A-wing losing its shields and suffering a Console Fire, while both X-wings were struck by “friendly” fire (“Rookie-1” destroyed and “Rookie-2” without shields).

Battle #4- LIBERTY AND DEATH

With no surviving fighters, the ISD Adamant closed with her opposite number, the Rebel flagship, Liberty.  As the two massive capital ships opened fire with all guns, Rebel fighters streaked in to launch their own attacks.

The Rebel fighters plunged into the deadly space between the two behemoths, dodging the fire of both friend and foe alike.  While waiting for reinforcements (ships being repaired in the Liberty’s cavernous Hanger Bay), they launched fake attacks, trying to draw attention and then withdrawing before the enemy gunners could find their mark.  Finally, they launched their Alpha Strike, which, in combination with fire from their mother ship, overwhelmed their enemy’s defenses, and the mighty ISD succumbed to its wounds.  Rebel losses amounted to one A-wing, which crashed into the Star Destroyed during a high-speed strafing run.  Ultimate victory goes to the Rebels!

Game Masters Notes:

The scenario (mini-campaign) was based on a series of posts on FFG’s X-wing Forums.  In brief, it was an experiment using colossal capital ships (Imperial ISD and Rebel MC80 Cruiser) as board-edge terrain.  I made partial ship silhouettes that formed one edge (or opposite edges) of the play area.  Each capital ship was divided into three compartments (Bow, Amidships and Stern), which could be equipped with any of the following: Turbo Lasers, Ion Cannons, Tractor Beams, Hanger Bays or Quad Lasers.  Each ship also had 10 energy factors with which to power the various systems each turn, including regenerating shields and/or arming weapons.  Weapon/hanger modules could be specifically targeted or the ship as a whole could be a target.  When all shields and hull have been eliminated, the ship is destroyedFor better details, see the FFG Forum archives.

As the original proposal was only an outline, I had to make some assumptions:

1.      Per Wookieepedia, the ISD should have 15 Hull and 10 Shields (huge, armored hull) and the MC80 Cruiser should have 10 Hull and 15 Shields (converted civilian liners with powerful shield generators), not vice versa.

2.      Ginormous capital ships (ISD & MC80) are immune to normal snub fighter Critical Hits – they need their own Capital Ship Damage decks.

3.      Planning Phase- ISD & MC80 allocate Energy to weapons and systems; place Ion and Turbo Laser tokens on Weapon emplacements/cards to show “READY” status.

4.      Activation (Movement) Phase – Ion & Turbo Laser tokens (already fired) move; if they contact a ship (friend or foe) or if their flight path overlaps a ships base (or ship’s movement overlaps token) remove token and resolve attack.  *Alternately, resolve the same way one would resolve interaction with an obstacle (ex. Asteroid); crossing = roll die; overlapping = resolve attack*

5.      I played both ships with three 12-inch compartments each with 0-1 “system”.  I strongly recommend that you use four 9-inch compartments and four “systems”.

6.      Ship Silhouettes- Template overlapped base edge of playing area, with the “system” cards centered in each compartment and with their base edge along what would normally be the edge of the playing area (ie. deployment area).

7.      Capital Ship Weapons- Ion and Turbo Lasers each had their own counters (use what you want or make some yourself) which are placed on the appropriate system card to indicate that it is armed and “READY”.  During the Combat Phase, they are “fired” by placing a Speed 1 Straight or Bank against the front edge of the system card and then placing the token at the end of the template.  Ion and Turbo Laser tokens will then move in a straight line each Activation (Movement) Phase until they hit something or exit the board.

Scenario set-up:

Pre-Game- each side had 300 points to spend (it fit the ships I wanted to use) though you could have more or less.  Forces were divided into three groups: Strike Group (at least 50% of force), Reserve (at least one ship) and CAP (remainder of force).

Game 1- Forces: Rebel and Imperial Strike Groups.  Goal: exit as many of your ships (with as much ordnance) as possible off opposite board edge while preventing the enemy from doing the same.

Game 2- Rebel Strike Force attacks Imperial ISD.  Forces: Rebel Strike Group (survivors with damage carried over) vs ISD and Imperial CAP (if ISD has Hanger Module, it may send Reinforcements as well).  Goal: Rebels- destroy ISD, Imperials- destroy enemy Strike Group, preserve ISD.

Game 3- Imperial Strike Force attacks Rebel MC80.  Forces: Imperial Strike Group (survivors with damage carried over) vs MC80 and Rebel CAP (if MC80 has Hanger Module, it may send Reinforcements as well).  Goal: Rebels- destroy ISD, Imperials- destroy enemy Strike Group, preserve ISD.

Game 4 (if needed)- Final Conflict.  Capital ships form opposite edges of the play area. Any surviving fighters deploy from opposite side edges.  Reinforcements enter from Hanger Modules.  Fight continues until only one side remains.

Rebel Terrorists Attack Routine Patrol

VINSOTH - A Routine Patrol into the Vinsoth System, Quellii Sector, intended to maintain clear passage for commerce along the Celanon Spur and Veragi Trade Route, was attacked by a band of rebel terrorists seeking to disrupt trade of food shipments and medicine.

Due to heightened rebel activity in the sector, the squadron - recent graduates from the Imperial Naval academy on Prefsbelt - were dispatched in response to a distress signal. These seem to have been ambushed by pirates flying rebel separatist colors. Reclaimed footage shows a small freighter clearly armed for insurgency as well as fighter spacecraft armed with illegal weaponry attacking the flight of TIE fighters near an asteroid belt.

Despite their lack of flight hours and regular combat experience, our TIE pilots performed valiantly in the face of this dastardly attack, eliminating both terrorist fighters, seen to be of the Y-Wing fighter type. They were, however, attacked from the rear by what appeared to be a stock light freighter.

Naval combat analyst S.P. Indoctor suggests that the flight of TIEs was lured to the asteroid belt by a distress signal from the freighter, reporting a pirate attack. It is probable, Mr. Indoctor finds, that the freighter was the decoy in an ambush intended for the new ensigns' murder. The flight's commanding officer, whose name has been redacted in order to protect the spirits of his family, was the first upon the scene offering assistance, and was the first casualty of the terrorist attack.

A spokesman of the Imperial Navy reports that the Navy will review its pirate relief policies in response to this ambush. "It is regrettable that our fighters will have to exercise greater caution when intervening during anti-pirate operations," the spokesman said."Tragically, this means that more innocent lives will be lost, and honest trade and commerce will be further impeded by this unconscionable insurgency."

Academy Pilots Strike Back

VINSOTH - After an ambush by insurgent forces in the Vinsoth system, Quelii sector, a separate flight of TIE fighters, operating from the same Star Destroyer as those killed in the ambush, located and destroyed the insurgent freighter. A newly appointed Quelii Sector Group command vows to liberate the sector from the forces of lawlessness and separatism that have plagued the region.

After a previously reported [see above] ambush by terrorist forces, members of the 1st Squadron of the 875th Starfighter Wing located the fugitive freighter, destroying it in a pitched battle. Both the destroyed and the retaliating flights were from the same quadron, operating from the Imperial Star Destroyer Inflexible. The heavily armed and shielded freighter killed two TIE fighter pilots, including the squad leader, in the process.

The wing commander of the 875th reports the regrettable losses, but "rebellious and criminal scum need to know that if they harm us, we will stop at nothing to hunt them down and see that justice is served. Our pilots are determined to avenge their own and protect their friends and families at home and everywhere in the galaxy from this scourge."

Both the previous patrol and the retaliatory pursuit are part of a campaign aimed at returning order to the Quelii sector. After the rise of the insurgency in the Quelii Sector, a new sector group commander has been elevated to command the new sector group, which has been reformed in order to "break the back" of the rebellion, according to the wing commander.

On the front lines of this counter-insurgency campaign, the 875th Starfighter Wing is an unlikely formation. With Imperial navy responding to the unprovoked rebellion, it has had to put assets into the theater, previously dedicated to other tasks. "The Inflexible has been a finishing school, of sorts, for the Prefsbelt Academy," Hasselstein relates. "Our pilots are as green as they come, but they're full of fighting spirit. As they engage in these missions against the terrorist elements, they'll accumulate the real-life experience they'll need to serve in the Imperial Navy."

Major Hasselstein did not comment on the matter of the pilots survivability in harm's way without full training, but it was clear that their trial by fire was a matter that weighed heavily on him. "Our pilots live and die at the pleasure at the Emperor," his adjudant, Commander Purvis, added. "If they are skillful enough to survive, they are worthy to serve in His empire."

According to unnamed sources, reported elsewhere, the freighter destroyed by the second flight of the 1st Squadron was a vessel unrelated to the original incident. "Nonsense," Major Hasselstein responded to this claim, "our boys got the right culprit. The transponder code clearly matched. Any word to the contrary is part of terrorist propaganda."

Those battles basically cancel each other out, so I recommend choosing different sectors to fight over each time you play -- or have the winner choose which sector they want the win to be scored in. If you like, in order to have your wins be more meaningful you can run your personal campaign in a certain sector but rationalize that its strategic effect is actually on a neighboring sector, or something like that. Anyway, carry on! :)

Yes, they cancel each other out, but I'm not sure why that's a problem. It allows me to write up an ongoing story line.

Imperial forces Ambushed:

An Imperial patrol conducting routine scans of asteroid belt EHG-188 discovered a Rebel rally point within the asteroids. The rebels jammed the comm systems and attacked, taken by surprise the patrol proved no match. Fortunately, one member of the patrol, STM-19, managed to escape and report the patrol's findings. A search and rescue effort will soon be mounted in the area in hopes of locating downed Imperial pilots.

Academy Pilots Push Their Advantage

AXXILA - Fresh from their revenge on the vile terrorist freighter vessel, TIE pilots of the Imperial Star Destroyer Inflexible encountered two flights of insurgent fighters, of the new 'X-Wing' type. These were courageously destroyed, bringing the Quellii Sector closer to being back in the Imperial fold.

This new skirmish took place near the Axxila system's jump point for the Axxila-Tangrene hyperlane, an offshoot from the Celanon Spur. Intelligence Analysts in the Quelli Sector Group command suggest that this may be evidence of a rebel attempt to cut off and isolate Imperial forces at Tangrene, an attempt now thwarted.

This strategic victory is a boon to the Empire, moreso because it was won by those plucky pilots of the Inflexible, where they are commanded by Major Hasselstein, wing commander aboard the Inflexible.

"Rebels will think twice about underestimating our graduating pilots, even if they are fresh from the academy," he said. "In this fight, they proved that they have mastered the greatest asset of their craft - it's superior maneuverability and speed."

But more than the superiority of their craft, it is their daultless mettle that won this day. "Our pilots themselves worked well together, but also knew when to break apart from formation, so that they would not pose a unified target for our enemies," the wing commander added.

The Re-supply ship Wandering Angel was scheduled to meet Dodonna's Pride at a pre-determined rally point.  The supply ship was escorted by four x-wings of the Rooke Squadron.  But as the transport approached the corvette, something seemed wrong, and Rooke Leader moved ahead to investigate.  The X-wing were suddenly fired upon by the Corvette, and a trio of TIE fighters emerged from concealment in the asteroids.

"IT"S A TRAP"

Rooke Leader and Rooke two moved to draw fire from the Corvette and attempt torpedo runs while Rooke Three and Rooke Four (a rookie) engaged the TIEs while the transport attempted to make its way throught the asteroids and attempt an escape.  In the engagement that followed, Rooke Two miscalculated and crashed into the advancing Corvette while a TIE fighter struck an asteroid and went out of control.  Rooke four traded fire with TIEs but impulsively exposed himself to TIE fire and was destroyed.  Rooke Three shot down one TIE then turned to draw fire from the corvette which was keeping Rooke Leader on the defensive, but some how managing to dodge the attacks.  Meanwhile the Wandering Angel  made it through the asteroids (while giving what support to the fighters it could) and was bearing down on the remaining TIE in a determined effort to destroy him.  The TIE managed to evade its destruction, and the Wandering Angel made its escape into hyperspace, followed by Rooke three and Rooke Leader.

Student Pilots Apprehend Illegal Shipment of Weaponized Gas

SALIN - In a further attempt to bring order back to the Quelii sector, the courageous pilots of the 875th Starfighter Wing aboard the Imperial Star Destroyer Inflexible disabled a Correllian Corvette carrying high-yield weaponized Tibanna gas for the rebellion. Fleet commanders are relieved that such contraband will not be used to kill the servants of the Empire or innocent civilians.

Along the Salin Corridor, one of four hyperroutes into the sector, the Corellian Corvette, Stoltz's Folly was apprehended near a cluster of asteroids, through which it sped attempting to evade capture by a flight from the 2nd Squadron of TIE Fighters, augmented by a TIE Bomber. The TIE pilots were engaged in maneuvers as part of their bomber escort training when they encountered the craft.

"Our pilots performed well," Wing Commander Hasselstein told HNN reporters. "They got into her baffles and brought down her shields one shot at a time, while sustaining minimal losses." One TIE pilot was reported killed in the attack.

Retaliation Averted

CATHAR - The battle for the Quelii sector continued today as rebel terrorists attempted a retaliatory strike against the TIE squadron who recently disabled one of their supply ships carrying weapons of mass destruction. Their revenge was fortunately thwarted by the successful use of heavy ordnance.

While patroling the Cathar System, away from major hyperroutes or other strategic locations, a flight of X-Wing fighters accompanied by fighters of the new A-Wing model attempted to strike at another flight of TIE fighters engaging in bomber escort training.

"The [expletive deleted] rebels clearly didn't know who they were dealing with!" Wing Commander Hasselstein reported while lighting up a cigarra. "They thought they were just going to tangle with some green TIEs, but then they were getting their tails chased by some proton torpedoes, fired by pilots who knew what they were doing."

"Pilot trainees aboard the Inflexible are taught to fly escort with veteran bomber pilots," Maj. Hasselstein's adjudant explained. "These sturdy craft piloted by expert pilots, armed with live torpedoes were too much for the rebel scum to handle."

Attrition in Quelii Continues

DRACKMAR - In a tough battle for the 875th Starfighter Wing aboard the Imperial Star Destroyer Inflexible, the Empire is once again victorious and closer to securing the Quelii sector against rebel depradations. Losing nearly all hands, a flight of TIE fighters from the 1st squadron, commander, and a flight of TIE bomber craft barely fight off another rebel assault. the Inflexible remains in command of the Salin Corridor in the trailing section of the sector.

Being unavailable to comment, owing to a dispute over flouting regulations against smoking, reporters spoke to Wing Commander Hasselstein's helpful adjudant.

"We are sorely aggrieved for the loss of our wingmates," the adjudant, Commander Purvis, reported. "But ultimately it's the mission that matters, and that mission was fulfilled. Quelii is one step closer to liberation."

Rebels Strike Liberation Attempt

DRACKMAR - While preparing to a surgical assault mission to liberate the planet Drackmar from rebel control, members of the Simitar Squadron, accompanied by a shuttle carrying medical supplies for wounded stormtroopers, are attacked and killed by rebel fighter craft.

Major Hasselstein, commander of the 875th Starfighter Wing aboard the Imperial Star Destroyer Inflexible, was distrought; wearing three nicotine patches. "It's hard to lose a section of TIE/sa's, when they're there to do a bombing run, uh, I mean 'relief mission'. Yeah, all they were there to do was to bring medical supplies to our troops on the ground!"

"What kind of villains would attack a medical shuttle - a medical shuttle!?" Commander Purvis, the wing commander's adjudant asked, shaking his head. "It just shows what kind of terrorists we're up against here."

"Yes, it's been a tough week," the wing commander added, "but we've been doing good work. Look at the victories we've had. Hopefully we'll be resupplied with new recruits and spacecraft soon, because otherwise this kind of unconscionable is going to remain unanswered. We just can't let that happen. Our boys' reprehensible deaths must not be left unavenged."

Imperial Forces Betrayed by Their Own

VINSOTH - Returning to the Inflexible after hard fought skirmishes with rebel forces in the Quelii Sector, members of the Inflexible's 1st squadron encountered traitorous forces claiming loyalty to the Emperor. the traitors were initially dealt with, but have pressed their attack, causing significant casualties to the Emperor's loyal forces.

the war of liberation in the Quelii Sector took a bitter turn this day. While returning to the Inflexible after deadly encounters with rebel fighter formations [it was a disastrous rout for the Empire], a combined flight of TIE/ln fighters and TIE/sa Bomber craft encountered TIE/Int Interceptors, also accompanied by an element of bomber craft. After initially exchanging hailing protocols, these interceptors, however, opened fire on the members of 2nd Squadron. Upon close inspection, these interceptor craft were painted with the colors of the Royal Guard of Coruscant. By expert maneuvers, the newly - but expertly - trained pilots of second squadron were able to turn the tide of such betrayal.

As 2nd squadron returned to the Inflexible, however, a similar report was made over the comm frequency of 5th Squadron, which had been on patrol against rebel starfighters in the contested system of Vinsoth. [They had been carpet bombing civilian centers on the planet.]

Several hours later, two TIE fighters and one bomber returned to the Inflexible. the flight leader reported having encountered a shuttle craft and escort. When having requested identification, the escort had wheeled about and opened fire on the 5th squadron unit. In the dogfight that ensued, the shuttle craft was destroyed. While the members of 5th squadron were satisfied that they had survived, they regretted the loss of their wingmen and the opportunity to see the traitors suffer for their betrayal.

"That's the tough nature of this war," Wing Commander Hasselstein said to reporters. "The rebels have convinced members of the navy to turn on their sacred honor and oath to protect the good citizenry of the Quelii Sector and the galaxy as a whole."

"We do what we can in the darkness between the planets where these good people live, but sometimes the only thing that can stand between civilization and chaos are our protectors in the ISB. I hope they find out whoever was behind him and ... well, you get my drift."

Got it, thanks! Today's the last day for this phase (which will be recorded as phase 7, not phase 8, because why make things weird?).

Participation has been pretty slow lately, so I'm hoping more folks catch this post and realize that the Unofficial X-Wing Galactic Campaign is open to everyone and very easy to take part in. Visit the UXGC page for details.
