Future of D2E

Hey guys,

 

Have any of you heard what the future of D2E is going to be? 

 

So far they have been pumping out expansions that follow the same formula (which is all goodness by the way) of x quests, y heroes, z tiles etc.

 

All of this building on the CORE set of the game.  Which is great and needed.

 

However, in D1E, they pumped out a few expansions with lots of crunchy bits and then revamped the quest system with Road to Legend.

Do you guys think or have you heard if they are going to introduce NEW stuff instead of just expanding on the core set?

 

BTW I love D2E, love the agent packs (re packaged threat) but not sure how many more quests, heroes and tiles I need.  Was hoping to get some new mechanics as in:

 

Power Dice for monsters and heroes (like 1E)

a better travel system or advanced campaign system

Act III crunchiness

Crafting

 

You could do anything with it since D2E is pretty solid at the core.  It just feels pretty 'sterile' compared to 1E.

 

I mean come on--in 1E you had tokens for:  Summoning circles, organs, bone piles, mushrooms, fountains, altars, rolling boulders, dart traps, elevated terrain, barrels...etc etc...

 

I do LOVE all the balance changes of 2E but it is definitely a much more sterile game than 1E.

 

Thoughts?

I Hope they will pump out a few more in the same vein to increase the basic tiles/heroes/monsters available (We haven't all got D1E) then release AD2E(Advanced Descent 2nd Edition) bringing even more richness to the Campaign where the overlord can tailor the campaign to his will even more.  Ranked maps where the balance is scored (like +2 is easy for the OL and - 5 is easy for the Heroes as an example) and he/she can 'buy' different maps to use in the campaign (where points are gained from winning or losing) and with the droves of monsters exactly customize the map to suit their dastardly plan (Campaign)

 

probably just a pipe dream though

 

I think at some point they will have to make different types of expansions (I do like the current ones as well no complains there, at the moment from me but I don't play as much as many!)


Wait lassie what's that noise? A few people telling FFG on a forum how to make their own games, well lassie that told them

I like the way they are producing expansions. I love new tiles, love new monsters, love new quests... there does seem to be an excessive amount of heroes, but it is nice being able to choose from such a large pool. But really, the small and big box expansions seems to offer something for everybody.

 

I love your suggestions for new mechanics, though. It is something I'd like to see incorporated into the series more... monster-specific dice in particular would be amazing.

 

And definitely more tokens!

I would like new themes (as the expansions already offer) and a coop variant.
I would not like too much additional rules and game markers clutter.

But I do really want that sometimes expansions uses other expansions (like part of expansion, usable if you have the other one)

Not adding a lot to this, but I don't think an excess of tokens is necessarily a good thing; knowing only 2E, I'm happy with just a handful of objective tokens that can represent a myriad things. I'm not familiar with 1E, so I don't know how I'd want 2E to change, but I'm pretty content with how they've been doing expansions: more heroes, more monsters (all I need to keep me happy) and now, more agents.

The primary motivation of the advanced campaign in D1E was to answer fan demand for a campaign.  D1E was originally designed to be played entirely as one-shots and the "basic campaign" was little more than a reward system for playing multiple quests with the same group of heroes.

 

D2E does have a proper campaign system.  Streamlined as everything else, but still a proper campaign.  I'm not sure what else they would do to "advance" it.  More importantly, the advanced campaign in D1E was fairly convoluted in an effort to keep it compatible with the core mechanics set out in the base game.  I'm not sure I want to see a repeat of that in D2E.  The current campaign system is sufficient for the purpose of continuity in gameplay.

 

I think an expansion that introduces a proper co-op mechanic could be interesting, if it's done right.  Otherwise I'm happy with expansions the way they are.

 

I wouldn't mind a full-fledged RPG system set in Terrinoth, but that would be (and should be) a completely separate product from Descent.  Compatible with figures and tiles from Descent?  Great, but not required, just an option.  I wouldn't want such an RPG to be dependent on Descent simply because the skill system isn't granular enough for proper RPG advancement, and it can't be without completely rewriting the game engine (which, as above, I don't really want to see them try again in 2E.)

I would really like to see Lieutenants and Plot Decks be more linked to their respective released expansion - Bol'Go'reth should be able to take adavnatge of Infector tokens, Ariad the Basic II Deck.  As OL I play Basic II, and my options are diminished due the reliance of the core set.  I know it has been mentioned in another thread, but allowinf dependancies on expansions gives players more choice.

In the future, I would like to see more "exchanges" between games in terrinoth univers.

 

Like DungeonQuest does, figure that could go from one game to another (i'm surprised battlelore didn't have card to play figures as monsters in descent for exemple)

 

But also by expansion, for example one with Uthuk Yllan monsters and lieutenants.

I hope future Expansions are bringing more options for the Overlord.

 

We are all very frustrated on playing the OL, we change in every campaign.

 

We think, only some new cards and in Act 2 a few more livepoints and other dice for the monsters is not enough.

 

I loved the way the Overlord could play at Road to Legend, to upgrade the monstergroups as I wantet.

I don't! the LT packs bring this beautiful new toy that I don't know how to use, and when I get it by the horns, my heroes feel it. A quest that should have been won in a turn (hero's favor) ended up in a throwing match for another three (heroes still won, but gave me another three threats before the end of it). The plot decks makes everyone sweat, or, if I may, might make the OL very powerful. I have not seen it become over powered just yet, but I have not been playing with it for a little while now.

 

I really like the feel of descent as it is. I agree with Steve-o. They are doing well. I would like to see, in the future, everything incorporated. Like conditions, tiles, dice, relics, heroes and LT. Maybe even flavor characters such as Jarom or Isglig (and who showed him how to be a mage!! Goblin mages hurt my head x.x) I like the use of the LT from the base game being used in other expansions, but what about troll man, she-dragon and spider lady? I love myself some back story. What if there was some grand mind puppeting them all, or something. But even then, I think more time and more game foter needs to be created. In the mean time, we can still hope. After all D2 is still very new.

One of the best things about terrinoth games was that hero's could play in many different games (runewars, runebound, descent, dungeonquest) but so far none of the new 2e hero's can be used outside of descent. I'd like this to change in the future.

 

D1e had a quest compendium, FFG should release regular compendiums for d2e featuring the best quests available from the quest vault or guest designers all tied together in a campaign, these would be able to make use of multiple expansions to make the quests.

 

I used to love how the overlord was able to move LTs around the map in RTL campaigns, something similar in d2e would be great. This could be a tie in with a revamp of runebound, the hexes would match the terrain types of the travelling events used in descent. The board could be used to play runebound or a descent super campaign.

 

Some descent solo rules would be nice.

 

I'd like a way to randomly generate dungeons similar to how warhammer quest worked. A deck of cards with dungeon tiles printed on them, you draw a card to reveal the next part of a dungeon. When the dungeon branches you split the deck.

 

I'd like some NPC models.

 

Once we have the city tiles there will be enough variety to support a RPG lite game, an advanced rulebook and character generator would be great.

I'd love to see some 3-D terrain similar to the furniture used in Hero Quest (MB Games). The combination of plastic and cardboard made the HeroQuest items gave those items a very nice feel and longevity - compared with e.g. purely cardboard 3-D terrain used by D&D (Wizards of the Coast).

Exploration as you go. Rolling to choose map tiles after turning a corner or something. I don't know.

I would like to see a hardcover campaign book that utilizes tiles from different expansions with longer more challenging quests. I d like to see mixture of valyndra/trollfens/labirytnth of ruin maps.

Something like Designer Series Vol 1 for Tide Of Iron.

I'm in the minority for sure, but I love the RPG aspects of this game. To me and my group, this scratches an itch to play a fantasy RPG without hours of prep, just plug and play. Only, I as a GM/OL get to win every now and then, and that's fun to me and my people.

 

I would also like to see maybe an NPC system similar to Mansions of Madness: Call of the Wild.

 

Finally, a portability or compatibility with Battlelore or Rune Age would be neat.

I kind of feel that this is really unlikely to happen. They tried this with Descent 1e (albeit in softcover), but it didn't work out so well for them.

 

Firstly, it caters to a relatively small subset of players (those with lots of expansions), and if a player doesn't have EVERYTHING included, they can feel like it's not worth it unless they also pick up the extra stuff, and players often don't like to feel forced into purchasing things.

 

Secondly, it was possibly the least playtested collection of quests they ever released. While that doesn't mean that it would apply to any future products, everyone who purchased it the previous time would be reluctant to buy a new one because of how bad the quests were for the last one.

 

I'd definitely love to see them produce a standalone campaign that incorporated various bits from other expansions, but I think we're more likely to see that effort put into other products.

Can anyone confirm that this product line has been a success? I certainly hope it is, but in Chicago, I am yet to meet anyone who has ever played it. A lot of the stores have it marked down by quite a bit. I'm hoping it's more popular in other markets. And Honestly, outside of Netrunner, I don't see a lot of FFG products getting played or talked about. Maybe these FFG games are played more behind closed doors in small groups?

 

so, I'm curious what any one else is hearing/seeing, because I want this game to be successful.

 

also...side note anyone in Chicago who wants to play, hit me up! Descent, Rune Age, Battlelore, Mansions of Madness, I'm in!

I think the fact that we're getting expansion after expansion is confirmation enough that it's a success. I don't really know anyone else that plays Descent beyond the people I've introduced the game to, but it must be a pretty popular game to get all these add-ons (as opposed to games like Runewars, which only has one expansion so far :().
