Ever since the release of The Emperor's Chosen, things have been rather quiet on the Deathwatch front. Has anyone heard of anything new hitting development?
Just curious.

Nothing specific.

That said, it would surprise me to see one at this moment because

(a) the 'first pass' through possible supplements is pretty complete - there's nothing desperately missing from the current line aside from more pre-written missions/warzones.

(b) FFG RPG staff have a major drain on resource with the Star Wars setting/rules

© Dark Heresy - which can be considered the original 40k RPG 'core engine' - is supposed to be getting a 2nd Edition update; one imagines that once that comes out you may see similar updates ripple through its subordinate offshoots, including Deathwatch.

If they do bring our another supplement I'd like it to be one that brings the chapters in first founding up to the same level as those in Honour the Chapter. Extra oaths, combat modes and speciality careers that all the others have received. Surely the Salamanders and Iron Hands to name just two have their own equivalents to Tyrannic War Veteran, Honour Guard or Sword Brethren.

I completely agree. And unfortunately the Imperial Fists just flat-out need to be redone. Won't happen though.

I can't agree with you enough on that.

I haven't been to the main FFG page for nearly 4 months. Nothing going on there that I'm interested in.

I'm thinking about starting Deathwatch, anything new at all or is the line finished?  I've looked through some of the forums but it seems pretty quiet.  I skipped it when it launched (too many other things going on at that time)...but now I've got some time and just wanted to catch up...but I may be late to the party.

It's never too late. :)

Pen & Paper RPGs are not like some MMO where you cannot play anymore once the servers have been shut down. Just get the books and have fun!

I was under the impression that a huge selection of books is considered a deterrent to new players due to the financial investments required? As long as the books that are available deliver anything you need, what could be the issue? Unless your group has a GM who really does not want to make their own adventures, instead relying solely on official products - but in this case I daresay that almost any RPG would be a (comparatively) short trip.

I agree 100%, was thinking more along the lines of a new edition around the corner and since I waited 4 years or whatever, another 6 months wouldn't matter.

Ah! Well, that new edition will be for Dark Heresy.

FFG did state they have no plans to update the other games. Of course I would not take this as a "never", especially given the corporate context (admitting it would likely kill sales for the current books), but then again this depends both on how well Deathwatch as well as the 2nd Edition of Dark Heresy were received (see various controversies over in the DH2 Beta Forum), as any investment of this sort represents a financial risk for the company.

Either way, if there will be a 2nd Edition of Deathwatch, I doubt we'll see any first signs before the end of the year, much less an actual release. And that's assuming that a 2E of Deathwatch would actually take precedence over supplements for DH2 or a 2nd Edition of Rogue Trader.

Of course, in the end there remains a risk for you either way (needlessly miss out on DW1 fun now? get mad about not having waited for DW2 later?) ... but it's safe to say that a 2nd edition of Deathwatch is not "around the corner". And you can have fun with the current edition already.

What you could also do is being cautious and just getting the Core Rulebook and a single supplement, maybe, rather than going all in? ;)

There is a seller who is blowing out a ton of (new) 40k rpg books. Which is what got me thinking about playing and then led to me think...maybe the line is dead.  Either way I bought in at a really low price and am going to give it a go.

Congrats!  ^_^

In that case I hope you'll enjoy it. If you have any questions etc ... ehh, you know, just ask around, people here are generally very helpful when it comes to such things.

I bought a number of the WH40K books over the December sale, and haven't regretted it.  I've been doing a Rogue Trader game for my wife, but Deathwatch would be quite fun as well.

In regards to other Chapters having Honor Guard and specialists like Tyrannic War Vets, i think that at least the Honor Guard is easily transferrable into a different chapter with a few adjustments.  The TWV on the other hand would require a lot more work, unless you were actually going to be one (i recall there were other Chapters in the Ultramar region that aided in the battle, one of them could gain the advanced speciality in my opinion).  Also, it does say the Ultramarines have been teaching other chapters the art of biomass execution born of their experiences...so a Salamander Tyrannic War Veteran isn't a silly idea.  Clense and Purify, brother.

If they wanna do a new Deathwatch edition, FFG may feel free to contact me, after having been a major force in the push for the DW weapon update ("Heavy Bolters are OP") and been heavily involved in killing the DH 2.0 Beta V1. Not to mention promoting the idea of growing together as a team.

I believe something could be done on the role-playing front too. Deathwatch marines don't mingle enough with "ordinary" people, just shoot baddies, and I believe I have the right angle for promoting the former.

In short, I believe there is something strangely unique to the Deathwatch game that can be cleverly branded, if executed well. A role-playing game experience that stands apart from usual games. Steeped in tradition, caught between comraderie and the thirst for glory, consciously promoting (legal) power-gaming.

There is still many things I consider very unique to Deathwatch. In other games I am very strict about interdicting out-of-character player coordination in combat. In Deathwatch, my players can freely discuss things for as long as they want to, representing the millenia of tactics and skill their characters have been bestowed with. And while I think that the game needs to be streamlined (20% of marines abilities (solo, squad, talents, armour, demeanour, etc.) stripped away), the sheer number of such abilities requires player's to develop some skill in getting the maximum out of it. Especially as they level up.

As a matter of fact, I just started in a PbP game as a Novamarine Tyrannic War Veteran. He fought in the Battle of Macragge. Cannot question that.

If you play Space Marines like they are Samurai, i think the roleyplaying becomes pretty easy.

I don't think I'm convinced.

One thing I am particularly missing is (non-predictable) mysteries about player characters. Part of the fun of role-playing for me is slowly finding out more stuff about the other PCs and their story. How would you inject that into DW?

Be unorthodox and think outside the box.

I let one of my players be a Black Templar Librarian (with the proper back story); the other PCs dont know this yet and they have been through several battles. He has as of yet not used one Psychic power and is very self-loathing, but orders are orders.

Another player is from a Chapter I created myself - an all-female Chapter of Astartes created from the geneseed of one of the Lost Primarchs (both of which were female with one siding with Horus during the heresy and the other staying Loyalist but being almost completely wiped out fighting the other). The vault opened in Erioch and revealed a perfect geneseed specimen and Ancient Astartes in Mk 5 armor in stasis. The Chapter has been a Deathwatch secret ever since. One of my players is playing one of these and has a ton of secrets herself.

It is all about the players not WANTING to play soulless kill bots. It is about pushing them to come up with in depth back stories. Like I read somewhere else, there are only roughly 1 million space marines in a galaxy of countless TRILLIONS. Every one of them is unique and an individual and privvy to their own quirks and personalities. Let them have some intrigue - keep it in line with general Astartes rules, but push them to be individual.

There should be new deeds for the additional chapters added after Rites of Battle, I enjoyed those in particular. And additional squad/solo mode abilites for FF and HTC chapters wouldn't hurt, though I could see First Founding ones getting attention first. Maybe another bestiary (with the new 'Nids in it)?
