Glad to see the Fortune tokens are pretty useful. I wasn't sure on how much of an obvious edge the Overlord would get from these packs, but the combination of threat vs. fortune, as well as agents replacing monsters (instead of being in addition to them) seems pretty well thought out. Only bummed that agents can't be summoned during Interludes or Finales. How GREAT would The Man Who Would Be King be with Valyndra replacing the open group of the second encounter?

Looking at what you can do with the Fortune tokens, it seems like a pretty good thing overall for the OL.  Here's a breakdown

  • Can get a threat token for knocking out a hero instead of drawing a card
  • Max of 1 threat token per hero (meaning you can't just keep knocking out the same hero) EDIT - forgot that this part is also per quest
  • Get 1 threat token for completing quest
  • Get 1 threat token for winning quest

If you spend threat tokens to purchase Plot cards, they go back to the supply. If you spend threat tokens to use Plot cards you've already purchased, they go to the Heroes as Fortune tokens.  Fortune tokens get evenly distributed among the heroes so no one can stockpile them.  Also they can't be traded.

Heroes can use the Fortune tokens for only a few things:

  • 1 token to gain 1 Fatigue
  • 1 token to reroll 1 dice
  • 2 tokens to get 1 free actions - limit 1 free actions per hero per round
  • 2 tokens (collectively, meaning two heroes can pay 1 fortune token each) to draw an additional shop item

That's pretty good, not too crazy powerful for the heroes, but still useful.  OL doesn't feel too punished for using his Plot cards.  I'll be interested to see how this plays out in practice however.  Also, heroes can't stockpile the fortune tokens as all fortune tokens get returned to the supply after every shopping phase.

Also noted that the monsters you replace with the Agent can't be reinforced until the Agent is defeated.

Now FFG just needs to release these so I can spend mah moneyz and get them!

I think threat vs. fortune seems pretty good in theory, seeing as how if an Overlord spends his threat on getting Plot cards, the threat go to the supply, but if he doesn't USE those cards (i.e. hordes his threat so heroes can't use fortune) well, why bother for the Overlord? For every bit the Overlord uses, the heroes have a chance to reciprocate.

Since the fortune on the heroes is returned to the supply after the shopping step, if the OL times the use of these tokens toward the end of encounter 2 of a quest they may not even be able to react or use the tokens.  Freaken awesome.

As an OL, I feel it seems pretty fair. I feel the shop phase, spending two fortune token, seems a little too cheap. I kind of feel it should be three. That's a huge boon for the heroes to have another choice for the shop. Though, I know that is should not be there (after some thoughts about it) seeing the OL can then last minute unload his abilities out onto the heroes (and I KNOW I would do that knowing that they do not keep the fortune tokens between quests). This still lets the heroes use the tokens before they drain.

Agents are very well thought out. Seeing as you have to buy the agent every time seems more then fair for me. In a way you are buying their assistants. I like that kind of hidden flavor. This "buying over" your agents also keeps an OL, like myself, from abusing the agent. I would so summon an agent a couple of times on the same quest. After all, if Kobolds are on the field, what is a master and minion monster, really? I feel the same would be true with other large monster groups, such as goblins archers.

All in all, I am pleased. I am sure I will have questions late.

I kind of wish they would permanently change what constitute for a large monster. I like how they deal with it in these rules. Calling a 1x2 monster large is really not cool when Venalya's bane can cut through my barghest like butter. I am ok it getting the bonus on my 2x2 and 3x2 beasties. But that's another thread all together.

As an OL, i'm don't think it's fair

2 fortunes token for 1 action, it's far too powerfull (3 would have been better)

But, if 1 fortune token may be used to reroll X, it's just crazy !

disapointed

depends on what you used the treat tokens for. Was it worth it? It better be!

I will only use the plot deck for the agent, and sometimes card to boost him.

And, just for the agent, 2 tokens for a powerfull master monster but a smaller group is a big price to pay, more if you look about the summon card to buy again each time the agent is dead.

I think the fortune options for heroes are just about right.  Good enough benefit to encourage them to be used rather than withheld to limit the OL's supply.  (Shopping phase discard notwithstanding.)

2 fortune tokens for an extra action IS pretty powerful, but it's limited to one extra action per hero turn.  Also, if I understand correctly, the hero gaining the action has to spend both tokens, and tokens are distributed evenly between heroes.  That means the OL has spend FIVE threat on USING cards (not BUYING card, but USING) during an encounter before any hero can do this, in a 4-hero game.

If the OL gets to choose which hero he gives fortune to, he can simply avoid handing it out to the one he fears the most gaining a third action.  If he's not required to hand it out in the same order every time, that means he could prevent the worst hero from gaining a bonus action until he has spent EIGHT threat in an encounter.  That's not too shabby.

In a 2- or 3-hero game, the amount of threat he can safely spend before a bonus action comes out will be smaller, of course, but the heroes also have less actions in general to spend, so it's not that bad.  Heck, in a 2-hero game, giving them bonus actions is just levelling the playing field.  It's practically charity.

I'm curious to have them and test them

but I may go more for zachareth and Alric, the first one because he plays BETWEEN encounters his cards, the other because the deck support the agent very well

So does the Agent go "Poof" after each encounter, after each quest, or when it dies? Spending 3 threat to buy the card and 2 threat to summon the agent seems like its a little too costly for a short time. Plus add the fact they can't use relics, not good.

the card goes back in the deck only if the agent is killed.

Yes, i too think it's costy, but it's the more good idea, for sure.

Looks reasonably balanced, need to see the content of the decks before any real judgments on balance can be made. That said it looks a little costly to get an agent up and running, i wonder how much use you will get out of them.

Heroes return any unused Fortune tokens to the supply pile after the shopping part of the Campaign phase

Sorry, missed that you asked about encounters. I read too fast  :P

I'd assume that the heroes keep them between encounters since the rules didn't explicitly say they get returned.

From the rules: "If there is a tie, the heroes choose which hero among the tied heroes gains the token."
