I just got a copy of the Innsmouth Horror Expansion today and have a quick question.

On page 8 of the rule book it says that the Deep Ones Rising track is advanced each time a gate is prevented from opening, such as by an eldar sign token. Does this only apply to 'sealed' Innsmouth locations? Or is it a global rule that includes all Arkham locations and other expansion maps?

If the latter is correct it sounds like you would need someone permanently camped out in Innsmouth after sealing a few gates.

A DOR token is added to the DOR track every time a gate is prevented from opening, regardless of where this happens.

Indeed, it's quite tricky. Ideally, you should pay some attention on what to seal first, and maybe risking some surges from high freq locations. Clearing the DOR track could not be so easy as it seems!

Thank you. It certainly does sound like quite a challenge.

Also thanks for pointing out that there are 'high frequency' locations. I've just gone back and sorted through the original Mythos deck in AH and noticed for the first time that some locations are represented 10 times, while others only occur twice. That adds a whole different layer of strategy to the game.

Yeah, you can spot out "high" / "medium" / "low" frequency locations everywhere in Arkham / expansion boards. For instance, in Innsmouth you have only two cards opening gates in Y'han'thlei, while Devil Reef is certainly a much more active place. So, you're right, a good part of the strategy is to choose where to close / where to seal and when. For example, you have only two Mythos opening gates at the Silver Twilight Lodge: if you don't have enough clues to seal, but you need to keep the gate number low, you can choose to close the STL without risking too much. On the other hand, you won't close Independence Square unless you can seal it. The DOR mechanism was created especially considering this! Skilled players tended to seal high freq as soon as possible, having new Mythos opening gates there simply "bouncing" on the already existing seals. Now it's a little more complicated, because the bounce actually triggers the DOR track, so you have to be more carefull about some choices to do!

Anyway, enjoy Innsmouth (a magnificent expansion!) and if you have any other doubt or wanna talk about strategy, feel free to post! There is always someone watching over this forum :)

So one does not add a DOR token to the DOR track if a monster surge occurs?

Until this day we always did so. But without doing so the IH expansion will be a bit easier. Good to know.

Nope, no DOR tokens for monster surges. You can crosscheck this on pag 8, second column, of the IH rulebook :)

Another thing that got a bit lost in the german translation of the rulebook.

Sorry to hear that. Unfortunately, translations have plagued this game widely. Just consider that the French edition translated both Fight and Combat in the same way. Just imagine the mess...

Uff.

Compared to that we probably have made a good deal with our translation of the rulebook.

Yes, probably. Anyway, your English is good; you could consider checking the English rules (you can download the odf for free from this very site) and see if everything's ok now :-)
