Astropath staffs/canes

Anyone knows what are they used for?
Do they provide a bonus to rolls, help with anything? Or are they just symbols of their status as sanctioned psykers?

 

Have I missed anything from the book?

Not sure what you mean, but it might be a Psy-Focus, which effectively grants a +1 Psy Rating when psychic powers are used "through" it, if you understand.

If it's not a Psy-Focus? It looks pimp. Good enough reason to have anything in Rogue Trader, really.

You got a page number on that Psy-Focus rule?  Cause I thought that they granted +10 to Invocation rolls...  Would be awesome if that weren't the case.

I believe the staffs are symbols of their office, identifying them as Astropaths.

 

If I had to guess what they were used for, I'd use them like an inquisitorial rosette; the one symbol of theirs that says "Thou shalt not frak with me."

All Astropaths are blind, it's a side-effect of being soulbound to the Emperor. And virtually all of them learn to compensate. An Astropath waving his staff around like a blind man's stick would be odd as hell.

yeah I miss typed, meant to say that not all learn to compensate, not that not all go blind.

course there was that one astropath in the HH books who got implants and seemed to do okay with them.

In my games, only the Transcendant astropaths gain the Sight. Regular astropaths remain sightless, and are escorted from place to place by their guards on a chain, as befitting their position as dangerous psykers. I tend to take a lot of inspiration from Matthew Farrer's novels though.

The precision of the Sight will vary from astropath to astropath, but for all of them it will require some minor degree of effort.

I agree that it would look wierd for one of them to be stuck using their staff like a cane, though.

 

I'd suggest that the main reasons are (a) heraldic, as noted above, and (b) an astropath is almost by definition a skinny physical wreck of a human being - a walking stick is a good idea.

 

I'm sure that senior enough astropaths do have a lorelei crystal psy-focus in the staff, but I don't believe it's standard.

The Soul-Binding process is very taxing on the body; many Astropath-aspirants are merely obliterated by the experience. Those that do survive often suffer various physical deficiency. It might not be in the rules as is, but most look gaunt, slightly wasted, and weak. My guess is that the staff/cane is just that, supporting their weakened frames. Most are also not overly active, so their physical attributes might not have been so great before, and don't improve. In the RPG, your AT could certainly have a nice gun, wear armor, and be a bada$$, but most of them are walking vox boxes, physically frail and such. As for defenses, many probably favor melee weapons, both based on their sight powers, and because, with defenders, if they need to fight, it has probably already gotten to melee assault range. I also like to think that they all dream of the day when a mighty force weapon will be granted to their hands, and the staff is a good practice for when the better weapon comes along.
