Hello all. I don't know if this is been done before or if I'm such a freak about Descent.

I'm playing with the idea of making a Road to Legend sortof for Descent 2nd edition. I prefer playing on a large world map and random events that occur. More like exploring Terrinoth either way you like and crawling into dungeons, combined with a powerful story.

I looked up other board game titles (Warhammer Quest, Dungeons and Dragons) and I think it should be possible to combine random dungeon layouts with a Descent story campaign. Also settlements can nicely be introduced into this mechanic.

Also it would be more a co-op play and so dismissing the Overlord player (don't kill me!). But as we see in the Night Edition Kits, the Ai of the monsters can be done like in Gears of War.

If someone has useful tips or just wanna hear more about some ideas i'm browsing for this, don't hold back your comments!

It has been done at least once before. However, IIRC, the other version was more of a pure conversion of RtL to D2E mechanics. It sounds like you're planning more than just a straight conversion with the inclusion of co-op mechanics and so on.

I look forward to seeing what you develop in this project. I think it could be a pretty cool (not to mention epic) adventure. =)

Off course, this is in the first place something i'm doing at home for the simple reason cos i love adjusting and creating things. If I have examples and others i'll be glad to post them here or maybe even a rulebook :-). I'm not that creative about paint tools and such (know Photoshop but that's it) so drawing maps is either basic or using Excell :-)

Like I said before, I kinda love to let my fantasy run free and then some ideas come out. Also I've been playing with the idea of converting game stories into a Descent universe. For instance, converting the story from Dragon Age to the Descent platform. It's not that hard if you think about it.

So if you have ideas or intersting pinpoints regarding either the road to legends conversion or a game conversion (Dragon Age, Diablo, Battle for Middle Earth,...) i'm more then happy to try to work something out.

Does anyone have an idea where to find a pdf file of the quest guide from the 1st edition? That way I can try to implement those quests as well in the conversion road to legend

Descent First Edition quest guides (those that contained the layouts of the dungeons) were never made into PDFs, as that would have allowed someone to "play the game" without paying for it.

Quite frankly, you would probably need more than just the RTL Quest Guide, as there were other mechanics that were involved (things like the overland travel board, dungeon cards, rumor cards, etc., etc.).

My idea was more or less to implement all descent quest into a Road to Legend conversion. Also this would mean streamlining the rules as was done in 2nd edition.

At the start of a game, the players choose a certain Main Quest (like the Shadow Rune, Labyrinth of Ruin, Shadow of Nerekhall, the evil plots mentioned in Road to Legend,....). This avatar becomes the Overlord and the finale of the approapriate quest becomes the finale quest. To reach the final quest the heroes have to explore a certain amount of dungeons/quests before the overlord reaches the appropriate hometown of the heroes and after the heroes level up enough.

At this moment i'm thinking 6-10 ACT I encounters, then 6-10 ACT II encounters and then the area for the final quest becomes visible on the map.

Off course I'll keep in mind the settlements (visiting market, blacksmith, temple, tavern,...),  travel board spaces with either random events, random outdoor encounters (theses will be the encounters with outdoor tiles), dungeons(these will be the encounters with dungeon tiles) ,... All of these can be randomised or into an overall Main Quest.

Rumor cards will be played when visiting a settlement that has a tavern. For a certain amount of money the hero can learn of a rumor and this spot will be indicated on the map.

I made a "quest conversion" document back when D2E first released, which I posted over on BGG with FFG's permission. It doesn't include maps or detailed quest rules (of course), but its enough info to convert any D1E quest into D2E rules if you already have access to the D1E quest guides.

If you make your system modular enough to just plug in a new main campaign, that should be enough info for people who already own D1E boxes to include those campaigns.

Be aware, though, that most D1E "campaigns" were 6-9 quests long with no branching or choices to make. So your idea of 6-10 Act I quests followed by 6-10 Act II quests will be seriously hindered using one of those as the "main campaign." They might work better as new rumour quest chains/mini-campaigns to be included in the conversion that way.

So far I have covered most rules in my head to make the conversion. But indeed, I'm having some issues with the lenght of the amount of encounters before advancing to ACT II and so on.

I would use a different starting point/settlement for each main quest the players choose. Depending on these main quests, certain quest will be played much sooner then others.

For instance: if players choose the main plot of Shadow of Nerekhall it sound logical that they start at Nerekhall and start adventuring from there on. So the dungeons they come easy to will be more related to the encounters found in the quest guide of Shadow of Nerekhall. Off course they can decide to explore further and perhaps visit Frostbite or Dwarven Forge... and there they have different quests. So the game will play differently then when they would have choosen the Shadow Rune campaign, although certain quests might pop up in both occasions depending where to the heroes decide to travel.

For that reason, having acces to the quest in Descent 1 and their expansions will only make the campaigns and even random plays more epical! :) Also, i'm applying this for just using random dungeons and outdoor encounters, like if you just wanna head out without a typical main quest/plot and just explore the world. You would draw a card and that states which layout you have to place.

Soon I'll start adding rules covering everything you would need to know for doing the conversion and just having fun in the world of Terrinoth! ;)

Hi Steve-O!

Can you, please, add the link of your "quest conversion" document? I was unable to locate it :-(

Thank you. Carlo

Sure thing. it's been a while, so it's probably way down there in the files section.
