Or players start insisting on "realistic damage" (ie: fire burns stuff not does +1d6 dam.) So they can kill more monsters.
It never ends well. because the GM will insist his monsters deal realistic damage to and the players stupidly agree and before you know it the wizard is just flat out GONE. (the folowing example is based on D&D)
Gm: "ok bruce, your wizard gets hit by a blast of searing hot flame from a fire elemental! you take 2D6 damage, your robes catch fire aswell, take damage equal to half your AC, and they can't be worn anymore, your spellbook is burnt away- all your spells are gone, same for your +2 wand and wooden staff of lightningbolts."
Gm: "furthermore the horrible burn scars are hideous and painfull deduct -1 from Charisma and Dex!"
bruce "hang on-"
Gm:" oh i nearly forgot, fire makes your muscles contract so - 1 to Strenght based checks and-"
bruce: "can we change back to the normal damage rules please?"
