Black Crusade / Only War Changes

Hi there,

 

I have a question to some BC veterans.

Recently i compared differences in adversaries speciffication between BC and OW. I noticed that in the mayor way they're similar but generally characteristics table is a little stronger for OW. The point is that in BC you could play space marines, which indicates all that power armour and another strong stuff. In OW u re a guardsmen, so in general u re much more fragile.

 

What version of characteristics table do u use/prefere? are that printed in OW books just updated ones or what? Am a little confused.

sory 4 my English; i mean all that table which contains characteristics like Strenght, BS, WS etc :)

You mean the fact that in Black Crusade, Humans gain 2d10+25 to all Characteristics, whereas in Only War, they only gain 2d10+20?

The reason humans in Black Crusade (and Rogue Trader) get 2d10+25, while the ones in Only War (and Dark Heresy) only gain 2d10+20 is that players in Rogue Trader and Black Crusade are assumed to be characters with a large amount of life experience.

I personally think that's wonky, and think that if you're representing humans, then you should be doing it across the same baseline and with the same upper maximums, which means that if someone starts with 2d10+25, they are already assumed to have taken their first +5 advance in all Characteristics (out of 4 advances total).

Personally, I would stick to 2d10+20 for all humans, regardless of whether you're running Dark Heresy, Rogue Trader, Black Crusade, or Only War. Note that there's good mechanical reasons for Black Crusade characters getting 2d10+25, however, if you are playing with mixed groups of Space Marines and Humans, so I would not advise doing it if you're doing mixed groups.

no no no it's not the case, don't care on PC. i mean adversaies and their tables. in example look at the incubus profile in both systems or hellbrute one. changed values in that charts in profit of OW ones. why? they were too weak in BC? (personally think yes, correct?)

I think it's to underscore the different styles the games represent.

 

Black Crusade involves being a dark Champion of Chaos, whereas Only War features simple guardsmen. They will die.

There's a difference in style and expectations.

 

Or the studio is just incapable of coordinating such things.

As a general rule, I use the most up-to-date system with the most recent rules. So in this case, I would choose Only War. Have in mind, however, that in a great many cases, there are a lot of different variations of a lot of different adversaries, simply because there are a great many different adversaries.

Just because two Incubi are both Incubi doesn't mean that they are equally powerful, just as a Heretek in Black Crusade and a Enginseer in Only War are both (or could be) Tech-Priests, yet are substantially different.

One Incubi can be stronger than another simply because they are different persons, or sent out to kill different opponents. This also goes for Helbrutes, they are not all created equally.

In a nutshell, go with whichever fits the most for the game you're building.

It's an easy explanation, actually: different writers have written different statblocks of the same foes in the books. People estimate and visualize different things differently. Nothing more to it.

 

Don't think too much into it, and make the adjustments you feel is necessary (or use the statblocks you prefer).
